What file do I choose?

When downloading graphic assets, its important to know the color mode and file type that will best suit your specific application.

Color Mode

The color mode you choose should depend on how the final product will be viewed. RGB should be used if the end product will be viewed on a digital screen of any sort. CMYK should be used if the end product will be printed or manufactured.

File Type

Raster files are images built of pixels. If you zoom in or expand the size of a raster image, you start to see the individual pixels, reducing the image quality. These files can be opened on nearly all devices making them easy to view and share. Common raster filetypes are JPEG, PNG and GIF.

When to use: working in Canva, Microsoft Office, Keynote, etc.

Vector files use mathematical equations to create an image. Because the mathematical formula recalibrates to any size, you can scale a vector image up or down without impacting its quality. These files require vector graphics software (like Adobe Illustrator) to open them—they can't be viewed without. Often, professionals/vendors will prefer a vector file for designing, printing, or manufacturing. Common vector filetypes are AI, EPS, PDF and SVG.

When to use: sending to vendors, manufacturers or professional designers.
