Fire Prevention Week

October 7th, 2007 by Terri Armendariz

Oct 8 - 12 is Fire Prevention Week. Remember these four basic facts about fires.

Fire is FAST!
There is little time!

In less than 30 seconds a small flame can get completely out of control and turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house. In minutes, a house can be engulfed in flames. Most fires occur in the home when people are asleep. If you wake up to a fire, you won’t have time to grab valuables because fire spreads too quickly and the smoke is too thick. There is only time to escape.

Fire is HOT!
Heat is more threatening than flames.

A fire’s heat alone can kill. Room temperatures in a fire can be 100 degrees at floor level and rise to 600 degrees at eye level. Inhaling this super hot air will scorch your lungs. This heat can melt clothes to your skin. In five minutes a room can get so hot that everything in it ignites at once: this is called flashover.

Fire is DARK!
Fire isn’t bright, it’s pitch black.

Fire starts bright, but quickly produces black smoke and complete darkness. If you wake up to a fire you may be blinded, disoriented and unable to find your way around the home you’ve lived in for years.

Fire is DEADLY!
Smoke and toxic gases kill more people than flames do.

Fire uses up the oxygen you need and produces smoke and poisonous gases that kill. Breathing even small amounts of smoke and toxic gases can make you drowsy, disoriented and short of breath. The odorless, colorless fumes can lull you into a deep sleep before the flames reach your door. You may not wake up in time to escape.

Keyboarding

October 4th, 2007 by Terri Armendariz

All grade levels are busy learning the keys on the keyboard. K, 1, and 2 are learning where the keys are, how to make capital letters with the shift key, and how to spell their names quickly. The upper grades are memorizing the home row and surrounding keys. Here are the wpm goals for each grade level:

3rd grade - 8 wpm with 0-1 errors
4th grade - 12 wpm with 0-1 errors
5th grade - 20 wpm with 0-1 errors

If you would like to practice keyboarding at home, here are some great websites:

Welcome to Carpenter’s Computer Lab Blog. This is the website where you will find links to acceptable websites for all grade levels and information for both students and parents about technology. You may visit this weblog at school and at home! First let me tell you about this weblog…

Anytime I have new information to share, I will put it on the Home Page (the page you first come to when you enter the website). The newest one will appear at the top with the older ones moving down the page. On the right are some links you will want to check out:

Pages
Under Pages, you will find information about me, Mrs. Armendariz and also pages for each grade level. On each page will be lessons we are working on and your acceptable website links.

Archives
Older entries will be archived by month. If you want to view any entries I’ve made and you don’t feel like scrolling through a lot of entries to look for it, click on the month the entry was made to make looking for it easier.

Categories
Categories are the types of messages I write on here. Categories will be things like Cool Websites, Internet Safety, Information for Parents, Lessons, etc.

Blogroll
The Blogroll will be where I put links to websites that we all use often. I will be adding more and more here as the year goes on.

Meta
Meta is more for me when I design this webpage. Students won’t be needing to go there for anything.

I hope you find this weblog very helpful and informative for both students and parents. If at anytime you have any questions or comments, please feel free to add them. Just remember: Everyone who logs on to this weblog will be able to see your comments! Please keep your questions and comments appropriate.

Welcome again!
