We studied the five senses this week.  On Friday we had to solve a riddle about a special snack that was served that afternoon.  Our snack was something we could see, smell, hear, touch and taste.  Several of our classmates made guesses  about our mystery snack.  We voted on the two most popular guesses- crackers and popcorn.  We recorded our responses on a graph.  We found out that eight of our friends thought our snack would be crackers and fourteen thought it would be popcorn.  It was POPCORN!  We popped our popcorn and enjoyed our snack!

We have introduced our first letters M, A, and T.  In addition, we have introduced our first high frequency words I and see.  Your child has been given flash cards for each along with the story, School.  Please take time to sit down each night and review this letters, their sounds, and find words that begin with these letters in magazines, books or newpapers.  It is also important to review the vocabulary words and read the story.  As a challenge, sit down and help write an “I See” story to share with me at school- there could be an extra slide down the big blue slide for the author!

This week we talked about apples.  We charted facts about how apples grow and discovered there are many types  of apples.   In math, while graphing our favorite color apples we discovered that most of us like red apples over yellow and green.  We celebrated Johnny Appleseed’s  birthday.  We listened to many interesting stories about Johnny Appleseed and found out his real name was John Chapman.  It was fun to celebrate his birthday by making hats and eating applesauce.

We are learning to read and write in kindergarten.  Together we were introduced to our first high frequency words.   They are see and I.   We did a “book walk” through  the story, School.  We talked  about sentences.  Spaces between words help us see each word.  We talked about punctuation.  Periods come at end of telling sentences.  Let your child tell you about the story.  We also used these words to begin writing sentences on our own.  It helped us see how reading and writing go hand in hand.  We added our sentence to our predictable chart that we have hung in the hallway.  If you come to our parent orientation please make sure you stop by and read each entry. Next Friday we will be coming home with our own copy of the story, School.  We will also bring home flash cards of our new words.

We had a great first week at school.  We met new friends, learned the rules of the school, classroom and playground and how to make good choices.  We also enjoyed books like Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.  On Friday we participated in our first “Find It Out Friday” science activity.  We investigated a real coconut just like the one the author of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom talked about in the book.  We shook our coconut and heard the milk, we cracked it and poured the liquid in the glass.  We opened it and saw the coconut along the inside walls.  Some of us tasted it and it tasted sweet.  After our investigation we drew pictures and wrote about what we had seen.
