A message from across the world…
Below is a message from Vero. She shares some interesting details about her adventure in Moldova!
Noroc! (Hello in Romanian)My favorite 4th graders in the world!
Sorry for not writing soon, but I don’t have easy access to the internet, but I promise to bring some good stories every time I can. Moldova has been good to me, everyday I like it even more. Even though I must confess I don’t have running water, and sometimes it can be a pain, when I have to wake up early to get water from the well, heat it up, and bucket bath (remember it’s very cold over here!) but regardless I was lucky to arrive in the season of many celebrations.
The 8th of March was Women’s day, so every woman was congratulated and given flowers. Flowers in Moldova should be given in odd numbers and never in the color yellow, unless it is for a funeral.
Here are some interesting facts I’ve noticed about Moldova:
Greetings - Men do not shake women hands.
There is a superstition about whistling inside the house: one says that money will go away, this is why it is not recommended.
Another superstition says that if one sits at the corner of the table this person will not get married soon
Moldavians usually:
- Take their shoes off when entering a house
- Don not offer yellow flowers for celebrations
- Offer and odd number of flowers for celebrations and an even number for a funeral.
- Do not pour wine back handed
- Women do not pour wine for themselves but wait to be served. Men offer to serve women during meals.
- May persistently as questions about age, personal life and financial situations.
- Can be insistent with invitations
- Present money at wedding
- Women wear scarves on their heads in churches, and men remove their hats.
- During a funeral, men don’t wear anything on their heads.
- Take something for the kids’ when visiting someone’s house.
I wish you guys the best with the exams!!! I know you will do great!!
La revedere (good bye)
