Wed: By appointment only Course Description:

Students will be taught according to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) to master content outlined for the English ninth grade. In doing so, students will be prepared for the TAKS test; which is a minimum standard test, for passing the ninth grade. Although there will be some test taking skills taught- this course is not designed solely for the test. Students will be gaining life long skills that will enable them to become avid readers and proficient writers. A selection of short stories and poems, as well as a few novels will be covered throughout the school year. Vocabulary, parts of speech and various grammar rules taught will help students prepare for the PSAT which they will take in the tenth grade.

Expectations:

Students in this classroom will:

1.      Come to class on time, prepared, and willing to participate in the day’s

 instructions.

2.      Complete assignments on time, with an eye to producing error-free work.

Please note that I enforce the tardy policy, the dress code, and the ID policy.

Classroom Standards:

The classroom is a place for learning, and behavior that interferes with learning is not tolerated. Please respect and follow these rules:

1.      Cell phones and pagers are not allowed to be visible or audible. Turn them off, and put them away. Any cell phone or pager I see or hear will be turned into the front office to be picked up by a parent or guardian.

2.      No cheating/plagiarism-instant zero.

3.      No food in classroom-only bottled water is allowed.

4.      I have incredible hearing- please keep your conversations appropriate!

5.      Late work- I usually don’t take late work for an unexcused absence. But, I do have an open door policy- feel free to talk to me at any time.

Absences:

Students are expected to get assignments by consulting the assignment calendar and composition book. Make a friend and get the missed notes. Students have within 1 week from the day of absence to complete the work without penalty.

Grading:

Students will have three types of grades: Major (25%), Minor (25%) and Daily (25%), Misc. (25%).

Please remember that you do have a summer reading assignment: Swallowing Stones, Joyce McDonald. A test will follow on Friday Sept 7th. This is a major grade, so I hope you have it read by then.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
