Sophomore Summer Reading Selections
Summer Reading 2008 selections for English II classes are The Book Thief by Markus Zukak and Left for Dead by Pete Nelson.
The Book Thief is a fiction novel set in Germany before and during World War II. If you look for this book at the bookstore, go to the teen or youth fiction section and find the author’s last name. It can be found in hardback or paperback. It is not a short book, but no longer than Eragon or Twilight (or most Harry Patter books) and has won numerous awards, including the Book Sense Book of the Year Award for Children’s Literature, the Michael L. Printz Honor Book Award, the National Jewish Book Award, an American Library Association Notable Book award, a Quill Award Nominee, a Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year, a Kirkus Reviews Editor’s Choice, a Horn Book Fanfare, a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year, a Booklist Best Book of the Year, and a Bulletin Blue Ribbon Book. It has also been a New York Times bestseller, and a USA Today Bestseller. It is also the winner of the 2006 Youtube Teen Spirit Award.

Left for Dead is an inspirational nonfiction book about how a twelve-year-old boy’s history fair project led to a recent significant change in a historical verdict involving the tragedy of the USS Indianapolis at the end of World War II. Find this book in the children’s or teen’s nonfiction section at the bookstore.
